HARLANDIC MALE VOICE CHOIR BELFAST
About Us
Founded in 1944 in the Belfast shipyard of Harland and
Wolff, the Harlandic has grown in stature
over
the years and is today certainly one of Northern Ireland's better known
choirs with thirty six members
in its ranks coming from all walks of life. The age range of members is from
25-94!
The choir undertakes about ten musical engagements each year, between
September and May. The
range of music includes part songs, folk songs, opera choruses, musical
theatre, traditional songs,
church music and hymns. We have
in the past sung for the Northern Ireland Hospice at their carol
service in Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Falls Road, firmly
establishing our commitment to cross community arts and the fostering of
good relations with all. We have also sung at Ballybay Co. Monaghan, Donegal
town and most recently at the Dominican Church Athy, Co. Kildare.
We endorse the principles of good practice in community relations and
cultural diversity outlined by the Community Relations
Council. The choir has received assistance from Cooperation Ireland, the
cross border peace charity under its Exchanges
Programme. The Exchanges Programme seeks to promote practical cooperation
between youth groups and community groups in
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The Harlandic Male Voice Choir whilst adhering proudly to a rich musical
heritage, is nevertheless always seeking new avenues to explore and is
continually expanding its choral repertoire, in an effort to bring the
unique "Male voice sound" to a wider audience. Under its present musical
director, John Lyttle, the Harlandic looks forward to a happy and successful
future in this our 6th decade of "singing for pleasure".
